About This Place

Situated in the heart of New York City, KazuNori: The Original Hand Roll Bar offers a fresh and elevated take on traditional sushi, specializing exclusively in hand rolls. This sushi restaurant is a genuine sanctuary for those who appreciate the art of precision and purity in Japanese cuisine, delivering an experience that is both authentic and delightfully simple.

The menu at KazuNori reads like a love letter to sushi lovers. Their signature hand rolls showcase an impressive range of fresh, carefully selected ingredients — from the buttery, melt-in-your-mouth Tuna Toro and delicate Yellowtail Roll to the subtly sweet Bay Scallop and succulent Crab. For those seeking variety, the set menus—ranging from three to six hand rolls—are thoughtfully curated to include favorites like Salmon, Lobster, and the prized NZ Sea Bream when available. Each bite bursts with freshness, wrapped in crisp seaweed that remains perfectly warm, complementing the soft, seasoned rice beneath.

The dining atmosphere embraces a minimalist, no-fuss approach that allows the food to be the star. Designed as a walk-in-only establishment with no tipping policy, KazuNori fosters a fast-paced yet welcoming environment where sushi is crafted and served one hand roll at a time. This method ensures each roll is enjoyed at its peak freshness and temperature—a feature that diners consistently rave about. Despite the vibrant energy and steady flow of guests, the staff’s attentiveness and warmth shine through, creating a seamless balance between efficiency and genuine hospitality.

Patrons frequently mention their delight in the standout dishes like the Ankimo Handroll, a rich and creamy specialty that's a must-try when available, as well as the uniquely textured Ko Ika (squid) roll, which captures the essence of authentic Japanese flavors. The delicacy of the Toro Tatare and the comforting warmth of their house-served Hot Green Tea and crisp Sapporo Premium beer elevate the entire dining experience, perfectly pairing with the hand rolls.

Customers often describe the flavors as surprisingly nuanced—even transcendent—highlighting that the restaurant trusts the quality of its ingredients so much that soy sauce is often unnecessary. The rice itself, seasoned to perfection, is noted for its delightful texture and subtle sweetness, amplifying every bite. Many guests recall the daydream-like sensation of savoring these hand rolls, comparing their experience to a gentle journey through the refined simplicity and elegance of Japanese culinary tradition.

While the queue can get quite long, especially during peak dinner hours, as delighted diner Mind Thamaratanasiri puts it, the wait is a small sacrifice for such a culinary gem. The streamlined ordering system and quick turnover mean the ambiance remains lively and engaging, rather than rushed or uncomfortable.

For genuine sushi lovers seeking an experience that feels both meticulously crafted and refreshingly casual, KazuNori: The Original Hand Roll Bar stands out as a must-visit destination in NYC. Whether you’re savoring a solitary hand roll or indulging in a full set, the harmonious marriage of flavors, textures, and atmosphere leaves a lasting impression—one that invites you back again and again.

It’s my little dream to visit the original hand-roll places in NYC where they inspire a lot of hand-roll places in Bangkok. KazuNori is one on the list. We chose this branch as we passed by. The queue is quite long for dinner. We waited for over 40 mins before we got seated. I didn’t go with the set but chose an individual hand-roll that interested me. My bf did ordered the set and definitely worth $$. The sushi rice is perfectly vinegared. Not too sour. Wasabi was already added for you so don’t make the mistake like I did. I love their yellowtail the most. But I think you can go whatever you like. Oh! And if you’re not big eater like I am, you can ask for small rice/less rice so you can enjoy every bites without being too stuffed.

Excellent hand roll sushi place with fantastic ambiance and service, despite being a no tip establishment. Very reasonably priced. Ankimo (daily special) and Ko Ika (squid) were especially enjoyable for this born-and-raised Japanese. They deliver one roll at a time so you can enjoy the freshly rolled. When we arrived, there were maybe 10 people ahead of us on Saturday around 3:45. The line moved relatively quickly so don’t let the line intimidate you. One way to tell the legitimacy of sushi roll is the quality of seaweed. It has to be crispy crunchy that you can easily bite with your teeth and doesn’t get bunched up in your mouth. This place delivered great!!

Very speedy line as the dining time is pretty short. Walk in only restaurant. Fish is super fresh as usual and no tipping necessary just like Sugarfish. The standouts for me was the yellow tail. The crab was a little too fishy in my opinion

Excellent hand rolls, seaweed was warm and so was the rice. i tried the 5 handrolls, scallop, crab, tuna, salmon and yellow tail, they were all very good, the seafood was ground and not the usual slice.

This was my 3rd attempt on a Friday. The place gets packed pretty quick since the open at 11:30 am for lunch at 12 noon. I had the special room which was bass liver, and a hand roll and bass sashimi. Very flavorful and yet very delicate. No soy sauce needed for any rools to be honest, even the rice is delicious and I am not a rice fan to begin with so means a lot. Overall an amazingly simple and yet indulgent experience, a must try.

Passed this place many times in the evening and there was always a super long line outside. Today at lunch we were finally able to get in without much of a wait. The hand rolls were perfect. We did the 4 roll special with iced green tea and it was delicious. Service was great and speedy. Food delicious. Atmosphere excellent. Also, love that they state this is no tip restaurant. note: This is not good for larger groups; 2-3 people tops as it’s counter service. My pictures were not good but the food was excellent

Tried hand roll bar for the first time. Really enjoyed the experience. Loved how each roll is made fresh right infront of you. They had many different choice of fillings, but you could also choose from their sets. Staff was friendly, atmosphere was nice.

I don’t even know where to start with this place. My friend had been hyping it up for months, and I finally made it there on the last day of my New York trip. Let me tell you, it was pure food heaven. Every single hand roll was a masterpiece. You feel full after two, but your brain keeps saying one more, and you just can’t stop. The lobster roll totally stole the show. And I absolutely loved their authentic Japanese touch of kindly reminding guests not to tip, which is such a rare and classy move in the US. From the first bite to the last, this place is a perfect 10 out of 10.
